According to the American Cancer Society, improvements in treatment and early detection means millions of women are surviving breast cancer today. This is great news, but there is still plenty of work to be done.

Susan G. Komen for the Cure reports that breast cancer will take the lives of 39,520 women and 450 men in 2011. It is estimated that 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will affect women in the United States in 2011. Additionally, 2,140 men will be affected during the same time period.

October is officially breast cancer awareness month. In an effort to help raise awareness about this disease, many schools and organizations dedicate games, distribute educational materials and host special presentations.
